AMPT Spotlight: Shifting Hearts and Minds

AMPT: Advancing Nonprofits works with highly experienced nonprofit consultants to help fulfill our mission of providing capacity-building support to Black- and Latinx-led nonprofits on Chicago’s West and South sides. To learn more about the consultants AMPT has connected with, visit our Consultant Portal.

With almost 20 years of experience in educational leadership, operations management and organizational development, Adria Husband began consulting independently after turning down an opportunity to work across the country.

After joining the first cohort of the Chicago Surge Fellowship by the Surge Institute, Adria’s interest in focusing her career on racial and social justice grew. Adria has made it her business to support underserved communities in Chicago, from orchestrating efforts to support systemic social emotional development in students, to creating and implementing policy and practices around equitable distribution of educational resources. When she learned about AMPT through Executive Director and fellow Surge alum ángela munguía, she was intrigued.

“Systemically, Black and Brown nonprofits aren’t centered, so AMPT’s mission to connect them with resources and funding is amazing,” says Adria.

Through her work with AMPT, Adria has seen the importance of capacity building. A huge issue most nonprofits are facing is access to funding. She has seen the barrier nonprofits face while struggling to force their organization into a box to meet certain funding requirements. “Many times, administrative and business operations take so much time away from the actual real work and the passion. Funders don’t usually provide funding for nonprofits to hire consultants,” says Adria.

AMPT works to connect nonprofits with immediate funding support, but also with consultants like Adria. “My hope is that in the future there will be more initiatives focused on supporting Black and Brown leaders in nonprofits and communities of color.”
